CBS gives full season to all its new Shows!

I'm a bit late with this news but CBS did just as NBC did, renew all its new shows! Did $#*! My Dad Says or The Defenders, Hawaii 5-0, Blue Bloods and Mike and Molly deserve a full season? Let's have a look at the season average for all of those shows compared to CBS season average.
CBS Season average in viewers: 11.83 million viewers demo 3.0
Blue Blood: 11.72 million viewers, demo 1.9
$#*! My Dad Says: 10.78 million viewers, demo 3.3
Mike & Molly: 11.44 million viewers, demo 3.7
Hawaii 5-0: 12.16 millions viewers, demo 3.4
Defenders: 10.36 million viewers, demo 2.5
Of all those shows, Blue Blood is on Friday so the expectations are lower especially in the demo 18-49. Blue Blood deserve the full season.
$#*! My Dad Says is below CBS average in viewers but the demo is over CBS average, that earn $#*! My Dad Says a full season.
Mike & Molly is just below CBS average in viewers but well ahead in demo. Mike & Molly was never in danger of not getting a full season order.
Hawaii 5-0 numbers are good as average, well over CBS average in viewers and demo but unlike Mike & Molly, 5-0 is losing viewers every weeks. Is that all cause by people DVRing shows at 10:00pm? From the numbers I have seen, yes.
The only show that shouldn't be getting a full season is The Defenders. It is way below CBS average in viewers and demo, despite having a lead in that does have a 14.212 million viewers and a demo of 3.7. Yes, lik Hawaii 5-0, The Defenders is a 10:00pm show and thus is well DVred, right? The last DVR numbers for the Defenders had an increase of 1,652 million viewers and under a 0.7 in the demo ( number not available since the show didn't make the top 25 shows). The Defenders gets just enough viewers to get a full seasn but its demo don't justify it. My guess is that CBS did give The Defenders a full season because it will move it into the Friday 8:00pm slot once the Criminal Minds Spin Off is ready to take its place on Wednesday 10:00pm after Criminal Minds.

DVR usage and how well is your favorite TV show is really doing.

As a fan of the TV show Criminal Minds I care about the ratings the show gets as it is a key factor in its renewal for a 7 season. So every Thursday morning I go to three different sites to see how CM did ratings wise, the previous night. Every Thursdat morning Mediaweek and TVbyTheNumbers will post a series of numbers; first the overnight broadcast. Those are the live + same day DVR viewing. Those numbers are partial as they do not have the final numbers. The final numbers are usually the ratings of the West Coast viewership and adjustment due to overrun or special/sporting events. Those final numbers are posted later in the afternoon and used to be the ratings a show success was measured by.
Then enter the DVR and delay viewing and all Hell broke lose for Broadcaster and cable networks!
Now a big part of the audience, 38% as of the start of the 2010 TV season, uses a DVR. For those people who have a DVR, they no longer have to watch a TV show live. They can watch it whenever they want. For the TV viewer this is great! Finally freedom to watch what we want when we want! Added bonus, that nice option that all DVR have, skipping commercials. This would almost be TV heaven for all viewers, the only thing missing is REALLY to have a one hour show instead of the 42 minutes we get for a one our scripted show.
Big problem with DVR is that advertisers, those who pay a big part of a TV show budget, do not want the TV viewers to watch their new ads campaign for the deal of the year on the new GM model....a month after the deal is over! Advertisers pay good money for a 30 seconds spot on let’s say Glee so they could reach the young, unsavy, trend slave, buyers. They want to do this while the trendy stuff they want to sell is still trendy! If you watch Glee on the weekend then you will not have seen the ads for the new teen movies that were opening on Friday night. In advertising, it is all about timing. Advertisers pay for your time when they want it not when you are willing to give it to them.
So you can see why, according to the advertisers, the DVR is the instrument by which the end of the (advertising) world will come. At least on TV!
To go back to ratings, when it is reported that Criminal Minds Season 6 opener had; 14.166 million viewers and demo 18-49: 4.0. We had to wait for the numbers for the Live + 7 days DVR viewing and that gave us the real audience for Criminal Minds which was really: 16.60m and a demo of 5.0 and A25-54 (this age demo is very important to CBS as it is their main target audience) 6.3 (source: CMRT ). As you can see, CM and almost all shows except reality TV and sporting events, all have bumps in the ratings when we add those who watch via DVR.
So, you might think, what is the problem with DVR? So what if I miss some ads? The problem that both Broadcasters and cable Networks have is that advertisers will not pay for ads time after live+3 days DVR viewing( known in the industry as the C3). That mean if some of you were counting on DVR viewing to save Fringe or Lie To Me, think again.
At the moment, Broadcasters are trying to force the advertisers to par for 7 days DVR viewing. At the rate DVR usage is growing, at least 5% a year, then by 2013 DVR will be used by more than 50% of all households. By then, the advertisers will have to think of new ways to advertise of TV shows.
Which bring me to this, anyone notice that The BAU team now uses iPads?

NBC: had 5 shows only two were scripted.
FOX: had 4 shows but all were scripted.
When it comes to demo average CBS was at the top with a 3.2, followed by ABC and NBC tied with a 2.8 and FOX had a 2.6.
Of the 11 shows CBS had in the top 25, 8 were scripted shows. ABC had 3 scripted shows, NBC had 2 and FOX had four scripted shows. All this tells us that ABC still have a few performing scripted shows but out of the 3 scripted two are aging shows. NBC does rely alot on unscripted shows and none of their drama are hits or even close to be a hit, only The Event barely made the top 25. FOX could only rely on scripted shows and only one was a drama. of all of FOX shows.
Of all the Networks, only CBS could brag that some of their new shows made the top 25, 3 of them did, Sh%t my dad says, Mike and Molly and Hawaii 5-0. Only NBC got to place a rookie, The Event, in the top 25!
FOX and ABC may have had heavy hitters with Glee(5.6) and ABC with Grey ( 5.4), Modern Family ( 5.1) and Dancing with the Stars (5.1) and NBC was on the map with Football (7.3, 5.1), CBS still manage to finished first because as any baseball fans knows, a more even lineup is much better than having just one or two heavy hitters.

CBS: had 16 shows out of 25!
ABC: had 6 out 25.
NBC: had 2 out 25.
FOX: had 1 out of 25!
CBS average was 12.50 millions, ABC had a 9,50, NBC had a 8.15 and FOX had a shameful 6.51!
CBS had 12 scripted shows, ABC had 3, NBC had none and FOX had 1. From this we can see that part from CBS, all the networks seems to be out of touch with what the viewers want to watch. ABC and FOX may have some demo ratings success in Glee, Grey's, Modern Family but its overall ratings is very low.
As for my favorite show Criminal Minds it did pretty well with a 14.132 millions viewers and a 4.0 demo. Pretty good for a show in its six season! Those rating didn't include the 7 days viewers

Criminal Minds Episode review for 6.01

Finally Criminal Minds was back!
So how was that season 6 premiere? Let’s get this out of the way now, as a season premiere we have had much better with the season 4 and 5 premieres. In season 4 we had the 'whose SUV blew up?!' and in season 5 we had 'did the Reaper killed Hotch?!' Those episodes had suspense. "The Longest Night" didn't as we knew Morgan lived. As a viewer to get excited at a CM season opener, I need to care all summer about what will happen to either a team member or the team. One can argue that here CM was aiming at the viewers wondering all summer what impact Detective Spicer's murder, the aunt’s rape and the kidnapping of Spicer's daughter would have on Morgan. That is a fine goal but that does not have the same impact as 'was Reid the one blown to pieces?!' I guess what I am saying is as I am not a Morgan fan, whatever happen to him had less of an importance to me than what happens to Hotch or what would happen to Prentiss or Reid or even Rossi! Personal preferences aside, let’s have a look at the episode.
The story. Billy Flynn has been killing for almost all his life, leaving in his wake a trail of dead bodies and orphaned kids. That is until he decided for some strange reason he needed a side kick. He goes after Detective Spicer whose parents he had killed years ago. He kills Spicer, rapes his sister who later dies from her injuries, and then kidnaps Spicer 8 year old daughter. The BAU has to catch Flynn before he kills again or kills Ellie Spicer.
As a story this one suffered not from the case, but from how some of the characters were written.
First, Ellie was not believable as an 8 year old. She was reacting more like a 12 year old or older. Also, after witnessing her aunt being raped and beaten, a FBI agent get beaten, and her dad being murdered, I would have expected her to be in shell shock. Instead she gets all
smart and provokes Flynn at every chance. Why didn't Flynn kill her then? She, like Morgan, does not fear Flynn and Flynn will kill those who fear him. Also, the Ellie character didn't work on another level, the actress was often smirking, and not a reaction I would expect a child this young to have.
Second, Hotch was a bit out of character especially when dealing with Morgan. Isn't Hotch the Unit Chief now? If so, knowing how affected Morgan was by the case, just seeing Morgan snap at Garcia should have been a BIG warning sign for Hotch. Hotchr should have kept Morgan either off the case or at least at the police station. Why would Hotch even let Morgan go into the house to confront an UNSUB who the profile predicted would do a suicide by cop? Hotch knew what would happen and should have sent someone else with a cooler head into that house. Maybe they would have had to shoot Flynn but at least it wouldn't look like an execution! Really Morgan, 9 rounds at close range when the guy had no body armor? A big overkill.
Third, didn’t like the way Morgan did manipulate Hotch so he (Hotch) would let Morgan go into the house to kill Flynn. Saying how they did support Hotch in the Foyet case was a cheap shot aimed at making Hotch feel guilty. It worked, Hotch, against his better judgment did let Morgan go, alone, into the house. If the writer’s, Ed Bernero, goal was to show us that Hotch is human and can be manipulated through his emotions and to show us that Morgan is not above manipulating people, even those he is supposed to have trust and respect, to get his revenge over a serial killer who had the better on him, then bravo, that goal was attained. But know this Ed, now I do not view Morgan as well as I use to and his actions reinforce my belief that he was never a good Unit Chief and could never be one.
Those were points were what I didn't like about the episode but I like lots of things about it so let’s have a look:
First, Love how JJ battled with the bureaucracy! Poor JJ, her job can be so frustrating at times! Her talk to Flynn over the radio was poignant and well acted by AJ Cook. Sure CM went with the mother angle, again, for JJ but in this instance it was clear that with Flynn 'guilt' (if any serial killer can feel any) was the only thing that would have worked.
Second, Tim Curry! I mean when you cast Mr. Curry as a serial killer you cannot go wrong! He played Billy Flynn just perfectly. Flynn was creepy, not really scary just the way I would have imagined. Third, Despite Morgan being an ass I like that he lost it to a point he snapped at Garcia. He might be the action hero on CM but even action heroes have their bad days. Four, loved the music, Leonard Cohen and Tim Curry somehow fit.
So, even if Ellie was not a great character, I sure hope the writers will not use her too much in the upcoming episodes (see the TVGuide article about the season premiere), even if Hotch was way out of character, I still like the episode and will give it a 7 out 10.

Criminal Minds Episode 6.01 Review

Very good season opener. We got great scenes between Hotch and Morgan, Morgan and Garcia, Hotch and JJ. JJ was amazing when she was talking to Billy over the radio.
Tim Curry was creep as hell! The little girl playing Detective Spicer's daughter was also very good.
If tonight was any indication of things to come for season 6 then we will have one hell of a season!
I'll give a 9.0/10 for tis episode!

Ratings for Wednesday Sept 16 2010

With the new TV season I will comment on ratings for some of my favorite shows. Today I'm looking at Survivor, although not a favorite but its ratings should have an impact on the ratings for my all time favorite tv show, Criminal Minds.
Here are the ratings for Wed Sept 16 2010:
Survivor
- 12.234 million viewers
- 6.8/12 HH
- 4.0/13 A18-49
Source: http://travisyanan.blogspot.com/
Those are excellent ratings for Survivor, much better than Old Christine which had its highest ratings last season with a 2.3 in the 18-49 demo. Last year rating for Survivor season premiere was as follow:
- 11.66 million viewers
- 3.6/11 A18-49
Survivor did improve in total viewers by over 500 000 viewers and a 0.4 in 18-49 demo and that despite having change spot on the schedule!
Lets hope that next week Survivor will still be as strong as this week and that it will benefit Criminal Minds!

What's on my TV Tonight
Interview with Kirsten Vangsness

My favorite part of Kirsten Vangsness interview at StyleBible was this:
Q: Do you and your fellow cast members hang out much off set?
A: Yes we do. I go to Pagets house for wine and cheese a lot. The whole gang always goes to any plays that I do. AJ went one time when she was 8 month pregnant! Shemar always comes at least twice and always sits in the front, it's very sweet. We really adore each other in real life. We all go to Joe's (Rossi's) house during the holidays, I just went to Disneyland with Thomas (Hotch) and his family....
Nice to know they all get along, so many people in show business hate their co-workers, it is refreshing to see that the Criminal Minds cast get all along together.

Tonight on my TV
Criminal Minds Season 5 DVD's

I got the DVD's yesterday, went out on my lunch break to get them! I love all the documentaries, especially the one about '100', 'Haunted' and ' A Rite of Passage' three of my favorite episodes of season 5. The gag reel was great too. Only dissapointment; No deleted scenes that I could find, maybe they have them hidden, I have not look at the DVD's on the computer yet. Other dissapointment is that there are, again, no interview with Thomas Gibson.

TV Ratings

With the new TV season almost upon us, I will talk about the tv ratngs. I will look at the total viewers and the demographic especially the 18-49 years old. I will concentrate at shows that I watch on networks tv(CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX).
To clarify things, the total viewers are reported by all the news media but when it comes to renewing tv show the measurement that matter are the demographics. The demographic or demo, are the 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54. Depending on which networks a show is on, some of those demo are more important than others.
One of my favorite site that do report tv ratings is tvbythenumbers and today they posted what they call the 'renew/cancel, index. It is base on networks average in the 18-49 demo and what shows average versus their netwrok. According to this index, any shows doing under 0.90 are in danger of cancelation. tvbythenumbers posted today a list with all shows on broadcast networks for the season 2009-2010. Lets have a look at this index:
Note: no tv reality, sports or special event( ex: The Oscars) shows.

Big Bang Theory 1.80
Glee (P) 1.90
What this list tells us is that among the scripted shows Glee is the youngest skewing show closely followed by The Big Bang Theory. What this list doesn't tell us is that shows like Modern Family do have an advantage over a show like Criminal Minds as MF rating cover only the first half hour of the 9h00 to 10h00PM slot. When a show like American Idol hit the airwave then CM gets to compete with AI when AI is at its most lethal, that is the second half hour when the name of the eliminated contestant is reveal.
That said, lets look at every networks the top five performers:
CBS: The Big Bang Theory,Two and Half Men,NCIS,Criminal Minds,How I meet Your Mother
FOX: Glee, House,Family Guy, The Simpsons, Bones
ABC: Lost,Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewife, Modern Family, Private Practice
NBC: The Office, Law & Order SVU, 30 rock,Parenthood, Chuck.

Should be interesting to see the 15 minutes documentary on "100".
